Hi my name is Pete. I have a question, hopefully I will get an answer here since I am clueless.

I work as an x-ray technician and I recently received an urgent email from one of the pulmonary medicine specialists I work for. We routinely exchange emails and I send them x-ray pictures as a way to save time since it takes 3-5 working days for the system to process the results of any given test.

I have an iPhone 5 and recently updated to the 8.1 os. My phone has been pretty reliable, and I never had any problems other than my battery dying pretty quick after 2 hours use.

I was asked to send pictures of the x-rays I took from a patient who happens to be a heavy smoker and who has trouble breathing. After the patient left, I wrote an email and took a picture. I hit "send" but all I could see was a "circle" that lasted a few minutes (like the phone was having issues sending the email.) The phone then crashed and died.

I was not aware of this since I left the office and drove home where I noticed the battery was dead. I connected the charger to recharge the batteries. I checked the phone before going to sleep and I noticed the emails were still "sending". I wrote a couple emails using the other email I have on the phone using my personal, gmail account and hit send.

I went to sleep but I received an angry phone call the following day.

The specialist had the patient at his office but he did not receive the email containing the xray picture. He asked me to resend the email and the picture, but when I checked I did not have any of them. I checked my outgoing box, my trash folder, and my pictures on the phone, but they were nowhere to be found. I noticed, however, than the emails I sent from my personal gmail account went through.

I would really appreciate of someone would tell me if this is normal after updating to ios 8.1. I am quite embarrassed.

Regards

Pete

Welcome to iPhoneForums, Pete!

First of all:
Your battery should last longer than just two hours. It is a known problem that some iPhone 5 devices experience a too short battery life. Apple will replace the batteries of these for free. You can check on this site whether or not your device is eligible:
iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program - Apple Support
If so, make an appointment at the next Apple Retail Store to get your battery replaced.

Now to your problem with the email:
Your emails and photos should not disappear without any trace.
If you have a Draft folder/mailbox, look for the missing email there. As it wasn't sent, it might be stored there for later use.

This might not help with your email issue, but it's always a good idea to do this after updating: reset your iPhone. While this will not remove data and settings, it might help getting rid of glitches you'd experience otherwise. To reset, press and hold Home and Power button until you see the Apple logo. Let go of both. Your iPhone will power up on it's own.

You'll have to act quickly on the battery replacement program as it expires on the 15th of March.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the battery replacement program. As per the email I lost, I checked the sent, and draft folders and there wasn't any trace of it. There were no emails in the sent file, however the emails I sent using my gmail account later, went through. I was wondering if this has anything to do with the battery being so low, or the camera itself. I had similar problems in the past: I would take a picture and the phone would crash immediately.

Has this happened to anyone., is it a known glitch after running the software update?.
Thanks you

This is not a known glitch. After the update, your iPhone shouldn't act this way.
Do you use iCloud Photo Library (Beta)? It can be found in Settings - Photos & Camera. I've heard from one user that images disappeared with this enabled. If you use it, turn it off. Maybe some or all of your images will reappear.

Is the account where the email disappeared a POP or an IMAP account?

Sorry for the late reply, it was an IMAP account

Thanks!

In that case, you should be able to find the email somewhere, if only online (browser), or when you search through the account on another device.

If you can't find the email, it wasn't sent, as well as not saved in Drafts, supposedly because your device crashed and turned off.

Btw: the latest software version is iOS 8.3. It came with many bug fixes, it may help with one of your problems.
After updating, reset your iPhone, using Home and Power button, as described above.
