iOS 5.0 to iOS 5.0.1

I have a 3GS with 5.0 and old boot rom, can I manually instal 5.0.1 using iTunes or will it fail because apple stopped singing 5.0.1 and force me to upgrade to 6.0?

The only way to roll into 5.0.1 is if you have SHSH's saved for it. SHSH is the virtual signature, like you mentioned, that Apple signs each version with. Without it, 6.0 is your only option.
