TechCrunch reports that in the light of its recent article about Instagram’s lack of anything similar to Facebook’s Download Your Information tool, an Instagram spokesperson has told TechCrunch that “We are building a new data portability tool. You’ll soon be able to download a copy of what you’ve shared on Instagram, including your photos, videos and messages.”

Provided this new feature is released before May 25th, it will ensure that Instagram complies with the forthcoming European GDPR privacy law that requires such data to be portable.

As TechCrunch notes, Instagram is not a particularly data-portable platform as it is, as you can’t easily save images by dragging them or tapping and holding them. You also can’t download images that you’ve posted.

Instagram has yet to reveal details about whether or not users will also be able to export their following and follower lists, Likes, comments, Stories, and captions, as well as downloading their own photos, videos and messages that they have posted.

Instagram told TechCrunch, “We’ll share more details very soon when we actually launch the tool. But at a high level it allows you to download and export what you have shared on Instagram.”
