I have updated to ios 5 and want to make sure the back ups to iCloud are working. How do you verify this. And assume the auto back ups include apps?? It doesn't say apps???

It backs up your device with apps pic contacts. You go to your settings screen and to iCloud > storage and back up > scroll to bottom and back up now

But it doesn't show apps, just mail and contacts.

The apps are saved in the cloud. Just to check, open up the AppStore click on updates and you'll see all of your purchased apps.

I can backup manually but why did the auto backups stop working?

Now the auto backup is working again. I did not do anything. Must have been a glitch in iCloud. But question now is I put on ihome station at 10:00PM so why does it wait til 5:45 AM to do backup?

Probably to avoid primetime bandwidth... Make sense?

Also almost everybodies phone is on the charger at that time...
