How to stop the ring from new messages

When my phone is on and the wireless is working, I often get 'dings' whenever I get a new message.

Even if I reduce the volume to mute, it still 'dings' when new message arrives.

Sometimes I prefer silence. Like this morning.

I did a quick search and did not find a solution.

Any suggestions?

You can put phone on silent, or do not disturb, to silence phone.

If that's not what you're asking, you can also get a silence text tone from app store, so phone isn't on silent, but certain incoming messages will be silent. Assign the silent tone to text messages, either default for everyone, or certain people if you prefer, etc.
