Need more information about your device before advice any reset incase your device is factory lock. So iphone G, firmware, baseband info needed.

need more info.. does your friend rely on unlock ? do you need to just restarted like a computer restart or a format (restore)?

if you restore and your friend relied on unlock then it will not be good for him
