How to make iPhone dinging stop

Every few hours, I hear a “ding” from my phone, sometimes accompanied by a vibration. I know it is not a phone call because I have set a ring for my calls. I know it is not a calendar appointment because calendar appointment are set to only ring.
How can I figure out what is dinging and then make it stop?

Go to Settings - Sound - Sounds and Vibration Patterns. You'll find the sounds used for text tones, ... there. Tap the one with the sound you hear quite often, and select "None". It's possible to hear the sound you intend to disable, by tapping it once, just to make sure it's the right one.
