how can I know if an iphone has been reported stolen

I am trying to buy an iphone on Craigslist but I don't want to buy one that is stolen. Is there a way that I can find out if an iphone has been reported stolen?

Ask the seller for the IMED # and call the carrier or when you get with him tell him you want to call the carrier to make sure is clear.
