Finisair could be supplying laser component for iPhone 8.JPG

iDownload Blog reports that Finisar, a leading supplier of optical communication products, has told investors via an earnings call that it is expecting orders of millions of units of a depth-mapping laser from a certain company that it does not name.

And while Finisar is not currently listed as one of Apple’s official suppliers, Loop Ventures says that it believes Apple to be the unnamed company, and that going by Finisar’s remarks, Apple looks set to announce the iPhone 8 in September ready for shipping in October, as has been rumoured for several months.

Finisar’s VCSEL, or vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, is a semiconductor-based laser diode capable of vertically emitting a highly efficient optical beam.

One of Apple’s known suppliers of the same component, Lumentum, previously stated back in May that it would be producing volume shipments of the component in the second half of 2017. Barron’s said back in March that it expects Himax Technologies to also supplying Apple with the component.
