Does a bulky case like the ottobox defender will reduce the signal reception?

Just wondering if bulky cases like the defender will cost some signal reception to the phone? as far as I know the antenas are at the upper and lower sides of the edge of the phone and the bluetooth and wi-fi on the upper side of the phone that will be complete covered by the case.

I'm wondering this as well as I have an Otterbox case, and often get weird reception, while looking at a tower.

The iphone has excelent antenas but just wonder if the reception will be even better without the case?
