colour for text messages

My son has told me that when he texts another iphone, then text background is blue, and there is no cost. When I text him. text backgroung colour at my end is green, and the text is received by him with green background. Can anyone explain why the colours should be different, and if indeed there is any pricing difference

Those with the blue background are iMessages, sent over Wi-Fi, and are only sent between Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac).

Bubbles with a green background are SMS or MMS, which can be sent to any cell phone.

Both our phones are iphone 6, hence the confusion. I went to the link, changed ny settings and now all is blue. Thank you for your help J.A. (again). Not sure how to show post resolved or award credit. Can you help with that?
