Cant udate newly acquired 4s?

Hello...i recently was gifted an old 4s which had been out of use for some time...it has ios 7.1.1 on it. On the update section it shows an update to the latest ios9 software but updating has failed on numerous occasions....i can only guess that i cannot jumo from 7 to 9?? How can i fix this or at least get ios8 on my phone ???? Thank you!

There should be no problem updating an iPhone 4S from iOS 7.1.1 to iOS 9.2.1.
When your update failed, was an error code displayed? Did the update fail at verification? Updates can fail if the Internet connection fails or there is not enough bandwidth.

Ok thank you, i believe it qould say unable to update at this time...i guess it could be the bandwidth thing i am travelling in india and havent had decent iternet for a while.

Let us know if the update works once you've got a good WiFi connection.
