My iPhone5 is one of the iPhones due for the free battery replacement and off/on switch. However, I can't get it to the Apple Store for a few more weeks.

Suddenly, the Off/On switch no longer works unless I hold it down to completely power down the phone. Is there a workaround that will prevent the display from being on all the time? Thanks in advance.

Use Assistive Touch to lock it:
In Settings - General - Accessibility, enable the feature. A dark, semi-transparent button will appear. When you tap it, you'll get various choices, one of them should be "Device". Select it, and then tap "Lock Screen".

Hope that helps.

My brother had the same issue on his 4s. Assistive touch is the perfect fix.
