No matter what tones I try to change my ring tone, message tone ect. They just stay as they were when I first used the phone

First go to settings>Sounds and click on the sound you want for each item listed that you are concerned about.
Now, go to Settings>Notifications> and double check that the appropriate sound is indicated there. Sometimes they get out of sync.
