AppleInsider reports that Apple’s smartphone manufacturer rivals are so worried about Apple snapping up all the available OLED panelsfor the forthcoming iPhone 8 that they are all scrambling to secure their own supplies before stock gets short.

Sources in the Taiwanese supply industry have today told DigiTimes that because of the increased demand from both Apple and its rivals there is expected to be a shortage of OLED panels this year. In fact, many components aside from OLED panels are expected to be in short supply, including memory, LCDs, and optical sensors. This is apparently also due to increased demand from Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo.

It’s thought that a general trend towards larger phones, with the average size now around 5.5-inches and even 5.7 inches, could be responsible for the increased demand for LCDs and OLED panels in 2017.

As far as Apple’s forthcoming iPhone range is concerned, it is widely rumoured that it will be releasing three new iPhones, two of which will have the usual iPhone LCDs, with the third, the flagship model, having a curved OLED display.
