Lumentum reports massive orders from Apple.JPG

9to5 Mac reports that Apple’s 3D sensing laser component supplier Lumentum has just reported a big increase in orders for its 3D sensing laser components, the very same components that are expected to be the mainstay of the forthcoming iPhone 8’s advanced augmented reality features.

According to noted analyst Gene Munster at LoupVentures, based on Lumentum’s own figures, around 55 million units of the iPhone models that will be using 3D sensing camera tech will be made this year, with capacity for around 160 million next year.

The results for Lumentum are staggering, with Munster stating that the company now has $200 million in orders in the current quarter, up from just $5 million in revenue in the June quarter.

“We believe the majority, if not the entire order, is all being shipped to Apple,” said Munster.

“We believe these comments further confirms 3D sensing (and in-turn AR applications) will be a focus feature in the next iPhone.”
