AppleInsider reports today that while the iPhone 8 at launch will only charge using inductive wireless charging at the equivalent of the standard 5-watt charger that ships with the phone, thus not quite taking advantage of third-party chargers such as those by Belkin or Mophie that work at 7.5 watts. But that situation will not be forever, as according to Jim Dalrymple of The Loop’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus review that he posted today, Apple intends to use future software updates to increase wireless charging capacity, and that the first one will be later this year.

The Qi standard that the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X wireless charging is based on actually supports 15-watt fast charging, but it’s not yet known whether Apple will stop at support for 7.5 watts, or continue to increase the charging capacity right to the limit of 15 watts via incremental updates.
