According to a report in The New York Times today, via MacRumors, Apple could have had the chance to show Sony’s film The Interview on iTunes, but did not indicate any interest in doing so when approached by Sony.

The Interview was initially pulled from theatrical release by Sony following a massive hack that exposed many of the company’s biggest secrets, which was thought to be provoked by the film’s subject matter, as it shows two journalists trying to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Many criticised Sony for seemingly bowing down to pressure and pulling the film from theatres, and Sony has been trying to find other locations or platforms to show the film. Clearly, Apple would have been one such venue, but Apple wasn’t interested in doing so.

MacRumors also reports that Sony announced yesterday that it would be showing The Interview in selected independent cinemas, with Sony Entertainment CEO and Chairman Michael Lynton saying that Sony is “continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theatres so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”

I think Apple didn't want the potential problems, whatever their origin, that could result from having the movie in iTunes.
