Apple to extend iPhone's NFC powers with iOS 12.jpg

According to a new report from The Information, via MacRumors, Apple is set to announce the expansion of the iPhone’s near-field communication (NFC) capabilities at its forthcoming WWDC on June 4 as part of its reveal of iOS 12 during the keynote event.

Currently, the iPhone’s NFC chip capabilities only stretch as far as mobile payments, but now, according to the source for the story, this will also include other security functions, such as unlocking electronic doors or transit ticketing.

As far back as 2014 The Information was reporting on Apple’s plans to expand the use of NFC to unlocking doors and transit ticketing, and at that time, Apple was said to be working with security firms such as HID Global and Cubic to perfect the system.

The Information’s source said that the new system is already being tested at the new Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, with Apple employees using their phones to unlock doors on the campus.

While iPhones are currently able to unlock some smart locks via Bluetooth technology, The Information notes that NFC is a more secure method, both in terms of the connection to the lock and the authentication.

I believe the Apple Watch has had this capability since its introduction in 2015.

How will the lock know if you are in the room already so it doesn't unlock the door while you are in the shower??

NFC radios have a very short range which can be measured in inches. An Apple Watch halfway across the room isn’t going to unlock the door. To do that, you’ll have to almost touch the sensor with the Watch, just like when using Apple Pay.
