MacRumors reports today that Apple has ambitions to use the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus NFC capabilities for much more than just Apple Pay.

According to the original report in The Information, Apple has been holding talks with various tech companies, including HID Global and Cubic, about using NFC for other services, including building security access and ticketing on public transit.

Currently only the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are able to use Apple Pay via NFC; the newly launched iPad Air 2 and Retina iPad mini 3 both have NFC chips, but these are currently only able to be used for in-app payments and not for NFC payments.

It is, however, expected that future iPads will be fitted with the necessary components, such as antennas, to enable NFC features such as the ones mentioned in The Information article, as well as the current Apple Pay features.
