Al Jazeera to screen iPhone shot documentary about Syria

The Arabic news organization, Al Jazeera, has been connecting the secluded Arabic world to the Western hemisphere since it was first launched in 1996. Back then, it started as a news and current affairs satellite TV channel, but since then, it has expanded into a larger network featuring several outlets, including the Internet. The station became really popular after the 9/11 events when it was the only channel to cover the war in Afghanistan live and uncut from its office there.

Now, Al Jazeera will soon broadcast a documentary about the events in Syria. This is of particular interest to us because of the manner in which it was shot. The news correspondent was working undercover, and managed to film the events presented in the film with only an iPhone.

The documentary is entitled “Syria: Songs of Defiance” and showcases aspects of the daily lives of the anti-government protesters. The movie even tackles issues like how mosques, which are known for being considered the holiest of places, are used as meeting places for protesters, where they discuss tactics and ideology. There is one part filmed with an average camera, but it took place after the journalist left Syria.

The undercover correspondent who can not reveal his name, or show the viewers his face, spent two months in Syria and met with resistance fighters, protesters, army deserters, revolutionaries, smugglers and just normal people brave enough to get involved in the process of changing the way things are done in Syria.

The model of the phone on which the documentary was shot has not been determined yet, but it is speculated it is likely an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4S as these newer models enjoy some excellent video shooting capabilities.
