AppleInsider has a report today on a story from DigiTimes that says that the expected introduction of an LTE-capable iPhone this year should very much boost the overall market share of LTE smartphones worldwide in 2012. According to DigiTimes’ sources in Taiwan, LTE smartphones could make up as much as 5 percent of global shipments this year, with sales figures of between 25 million and 30 million units. This would represent a huge shift in the current figures regarding the market share of LTE smartphones, which at the time of writing make up only a very small percentage of mobile phone sales. DigiTimes says that this dramatic change would be for the most part brought about by the introduction of an LTE-capable iPhone in the second half of the year. Currently it’s Android that dominates the LTE smartphone market, but that looks set to change by the end of the year, with Nokia and HTC already having launched LTE Windows Phone handsets, and Apple and RIM looking to follow suit later in the year.
