YouTube Go.JPG

9to5 Mac reports that Google has designed a new YouTube app, YouTube Go, specifically to help users avoid running up huge data bills on the go. Unfortunately this very handy app won’t be available anywhere other than India just yet, but Google says that the app will be rolled out in other countries in the future, including the US and Europe.

YouTube Go is designed to help you preserve your precious data allowance in four different ways:

a) You can use the offline mode to download content via Wi-Fi and then watch it later.

b) You can use preview mode to view an animated preview GIF of a video to decide whether or not you want to watch the whole thing.

c) You will be able to tell at a glance just how much data each available resolution will use.

d) You can send a video that you want to share with a friend directly to them via Bluetooth, to save their data allowance.

survival solo card game Frost out now.JPG

Monday is not usually a big day for iOS game releases, but TouchArcade reports that Frost bucks the trend by arriving in the App Store today, and what a treat it is! The creation of game designer Jérôme Bodin, Frost is a survival solo card game inspired by deck-building board games such as Dominion and Ascension, to name just two, where you are in charge of a group of people who are struggling to survive the ordeal of being trapped in a deadly storm in the Arctic.

Frost has already been extremely well received on Steam, and looks just as good on iOS. As TouchArcade reports, what truly sets the game aside from the competition is Bodin’s gorgeous hand-drawn art style. It also boasts challenging and in-depth gameplay, but has also been designed in such a way that it shouldn’t be too hard to get to grips with if you’re a newcomer to deck-building card games.

On his blog, Bodin explains that you start each game with a finite set of resources, which is your starting deck, which comprises a combination of the four basic game resources: Food, Materials, Survivors, and Fatigue. Your main goal is to reach the Refuge by travelling across the frozen wasteland, gathering the resources that you need to travel from one area to the next. Along the way you’ll face challenges from other people, as well as wolf packs, and much more besides. Ideal Cards can be acquired to help you in your quest, with powerful effects and tools.

Bodin says that he would like to create more modes in future that explore other areas of Frost and focus on other tribes or societies.

New iPhone 7 announced.JPG

Well-sourced KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new note to investors today, according to 9to5 Mac, in which he says that while iPhone 7 Plus shipment volume has exceed expectations, as has been widely reported, iPhone 7 shipment volume will in the end still be lower than that of the iPhone 6s, year on year.

As far as reasons for the unexpectedly high shipments of the iPhone 7 Plus are concerned, Kuo says that the Galaxy Note 7 recall by Samsung has been a factor, as has the popularity of the dual-camera feature.

Kuo also states that the initial shortages of both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were not only due to customer demand, but also due to the fact that the most popular colour choice, the Jet Black model, is much more difficult to make than other models, with a yield rate of 60% to 70%. Kuo points out that the iPhone 7 launched in more than double the number of countries this year, thus causing stock shortages.

And despite the iPhone 7 Plus performing beyond expectations, Kuo still expects there to be a year-over-year decline in iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus shipments, and he says that numbers will in fact be lower than that of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus last year.

People pranked to drill headphone jack in iPhone 7.JPG

BGR has an extraordinary tale of an online prank that has gone very wrong indeed for some gullible iPhone 7 owners. It seems that YouTube channel TechRax posted a parody video entitled “Secret Hack To Get Headphone Jack on the iPhone 7” that makes fun of the whole iPhone 7 headphone jack removal furore.

Basically, the video suggests that you use a drill to make a headphone jack in your shiny new iPhone. You can’t really blame TechRax for having a bit of a laugh; they probably didn’t expect anyone to actually take their video seriously, but it appears that some hapless users may well have done so, with some people leaving comments underneath the video stating that they have actually followed the advice in the video and drilled a hole in their iPhone 7! Of course there’s no way of knowing if the comments are genuine, but doubtless there’s always someone gullible enough to actually try. The prank has certainly paid off in one respect, with more than 10 million views for the video.

Dog Sled Saga out now.JPG

Dan FitzGerald and Lisa Bromiel’s Dog Sled Saga is a really unusual and very charming game that is based around running a dogsledding team. It began as a Kickstarter project that was quickly funded back in 2013, was very well received on Steam Early Access, and has now arrived on iOS.

You take on the role of a rookie musher, running a dogsledding team and growing the dogs’ skills by looking after them and training them. Each dog on your team has unique traits that you must develop to progress on the trails of Mount St. Something. It’s up to you to budget monthly expenses for the league, hire and fire dogs, use your mushing fame to earn sponsorship, hire employees, and even breed puppies.

The dogsledding action is pick-up-and-play; if your dogs start to feel hungry, they’ll slow down, so you have to throw food (which is limited in supply) to them to make them speed up again. You’ll also have to avoid hazards on the track.
I really love the old-school look and feel of this game!

Apple still working on its own Amazon echo.JPG

Bloomberg writes that it has heard from sources familiar with Apple’s plans that the company is continuing to work on its own version of Amazon’s Echo smart-home device, based around Siri.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the project has already reached the prototype-testing stage, after more than 2 years in the research and development lab. Just as with Amazon’s Echo, the unnamed Apple device will be able to control appliances, locks, lighting, and curtains, for example, all via voice activation.

Don’t get too excited about the prospect of Siri running your home for you just yet, however, as the sources also say that Apple has not yet finalised the plans for the device, and could still scrap them.

Apparently Apple wants to ensure that its own device has several distinguishable characteristics that set it aside from Amazon’s Echo and also the forthcoming Google Home, such as more advanced microphone and speaker technology. The sources said that some of the prototypes that are being tested have facial recognition sensors, which could be the result of Apple’s recent acquisition of facial-recognition start-ups Faceshift and Emotient. Based on such technology, the device could even be able to respond to a user’s facial expressions and emotions.

Aside from being used to control smart-home connected devices, the new smart speaker could also react to the sort of commands that Siri currently reacts to on the iPhone and iPad, such as reading e-mails, sending texts, and playing Apple Music content. Mapping information could also be integrated into the speaker, so that it could let you know when you need to leave the house for an appointment.

As far as when this new device might be available, Bloomberg’s sources say that Apple engineers have already been testing it in their homes, which gives us a vague idea of a possible release timeline based on previous products. For example, Tim Cook is on record as saying that he tested the iPad at home for...

More iPhone 7 stock to arrive by October 8.JPG

Great news if you didn’t manage to get an iPhone 7 at launch, as AppleInsider reports that it has been told by many sources in the Apple retail supply chain that there will soon be a slow and steady improvement in the stock of all Apple retail stores. In particular, the supply of iPhone 7 units is expected to be greatly improved by early October, with full stock by October 8.

Even so, the source said that customers should still be sure to reserve online before heading for the Apple retail store. “Just because we’ll have stock, doesn’t mean that we didn’t get cleaned out for the day an hour before you get here,” said the source.

AppleInsider says that it has seen documents that prove that the bankruptcy situation of the Hanjin freight company has caused a logjam in international shipping, leading to containers jam-packed with iPhones and Apple Watch models being delayed and not making the September 16 launch date.

AppleInsider’s sources also said that an “unnamed tech company” has paid some of the outstanding shipping port fees on the U.S. Pacific coast for Hanjin’s ships so that they can dock and offload their containers full of Apple devices.
