AppleInsider reports today that several iPhone 6 Plus users have reported a problem with their new phones, whereby they are crashing without reason, or continuously rebooting. Phones affected by this issue are being replaced for new units when taken to Apple Stores customer service.

An Apple Support Community forum thread focusing on the issue has more than 9,000 views and 60 replies, so it is clearly not an isolated issue.

Posters to the thread say that the 128GB model seems to be the most badly affected by the issue, especially with more than 700 apps installed. Crashes are reported to be occurring even without any user interaction.

There appears to be a conflict of opinion about what is causing the problem, with some saying it is a software issue, and others saying that it is down to the hardware, as the problem was not fixed by iOS 8.1.

Worryingly, even replacement phones for faulty units that have been issued to customers by Apple Store Geniuses seem to have the same problem; some iPhone 6 Plus owners are already on their fourth replacement phone.

AppleInsider is awaiting comment from Apple on this matter.

Facebook has already made a tradition of releasing apps that aren't necessarily tied to its main product - the world's most popular social network. The company has unveiled a brand new iPhone application called Rooms, which is available free of charge in the App Store and you can get it by following the link at the end. Here's how Facebook describes it:

"Rooms lets you create places for the things you're passionate about. Pick a topic, customize the look and feel, be whoever you want to be and share with others. It's perfect for the things you love and interests that make you unique."

And here are its main features:
  • Pick a topic: Create a home for people who are as into the topic as you are.
  • Customize the look and feel: Pick a color, choose an emoji for your like button, and more!
  • Be whoever you want to be: Choose nicknames for yourself, real or made up.
  • Share with others: Invite other people so you can share photos, videos, and notes with them.

It's an economic truism that if you want more of something, you will probably need to pay more to get it. This is as true for big corporations as it is for us consumers. Apple plans to incentivize Foxconn to product even more iPhone 6 Plus smartphones by paying them 20-25% more in an effort to get them to improve the “mass production efficiency for the device.”

Apparently, demand for the iPhone 6 Plus was a bit higher than Apple expected and supply is falling a bit behind. Here's a quote with more of the details,

This is one of the first times we have ever reported Apple willing to fork out more funds to ramp up production of a device.

Foxconn is already a massive and ever-present supply-chain partner for Apple, but according to a report in The Wall Street Journal today, via MacRumors, the firm is looking to become an even bigger part of Apple’s manufacturing process.

It seems that Foxconn is aiming to build a new plant solely for the purpose of manufacturing displays for Apple products.

The WSJ says that Foxconn is considering investing with the government of Zhengzhou in China, which is approximately 750 kilometers south of Beijing. The two parties have even got as far as discussing how the investment would be divided, with a total investment figure of around 35 billion yuan ($5.7 billion) being bandied around.

As The Wall Street Journal’s illustration shows, iPhone screens are the most expensive part of the phones to make, and in the past Apple has shopped around, using a wide variety of manufacturers, including Samsung, LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display. Foxconn has apparently been trying to become more expert at display production in the hopes of winning more business from Apple.

BGR reports today on what appear to be yet more problems for those who like to casually stuff their iPhones in their pockets. Although carrying your iPhone in a pocket might not be the best way to protect your precious, and very expensive, device, it’s fair to say that many people do choose to do so, and it seems that could be a problem for jeans wearers.

According to BGR, several iPhone 6 owners that it has spoken to in the past few weeks have found that when they repeatedly place an uncovered iPhone 6 in the pocket of their denim jeans, the dye from the jeans is rubbing onto the plastic strips on the back of the phone. This apparently leaves the phone looking “dirty and old.”

Attempts to clean the plastic strips and return them to their former pristine glory using soap and other cleaning methods have apparently not been successful.

BGR even has photos of the damage, such as the one at the top of this post.

The BGR readers whose phones were affected in this way were told by Apple Support to scrub the back of the phones with cleaning products, but offered no more assistance beyond that.

So, is this an issue that Apple should be taking steps to address, or is it merely a question of iPhone owners being more careful about where they put their phones?

If you are a baseball fan, you might appreciate Master Card's new Apple Pay video commercials. It seems that the credit card company has not only teamed up with Apple to utilize the Apple Pay mobile payment platform, they are even spending time and money advertising it.

You might wonder why the commercials have a "baseball" theme to them, but it actually makes perfect sense. The commercials used Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda and George Brett, and recently retired great Mariano Rivera, and these commercials were first aired during the recent World Series.

Even if you aren't a baseball fan, it's easy to understand the value reference the videos are proposing. Sound off and let us know if you think Apple Pay will be a successful new product from the folks in Cupertino.
