Music Video Shot Entirely on iPhone 4 HD

Jul 07, 2010 - 7:13 AM - by Maura

Both Pocket-lint and Macworld have reported this week on what is claimed to be the first ever music video shot entirely on the iPhone 4. The artist is Canadian musician Steve Failows, who records under the name Flakjakt, and the song is Cacades. The video was shot entirely using the iPhone 4’s built-in HD video recorder in just 1.3 days. It took 2 days to edit, using Final Cut Pro, meaning that it wasn’t an entirely iPhone 4 produced project, but it’s still pretty impressive all the same.

As Pocket-lint points out, even if the video wasn’t edited on the iPhone 4, the quality of the final product shows that the iPhone 4 can produce some truly impressive visuals. You also have to hand it to Steve and video director Marty Martin for having the brainwave of using the iPhone 4 in the first place, and then going on to publicise the fact, as it’s earned the video over 100, 000 views on You Tube in just one week, and who knows, maybe it will even earn them a recording contract if enough people like the music.

iPhone 4 Bandwith Woes - AT&T Not Intentionally Throttling

Jul 07, 2010 - 6:29 AM - by Maura

As reported on this forum yesterday, AT&T was suspected of throttling 3G speeds in various regions in the US, including NYC, Boston, Minneapolis, and many more, with members of the Macrumors forum reporting “ten-fold” decreases in upload speed. Apparently, upload speeds are topping out at 100Kbps, which is way below what the HSPA-enabled iPhone 4 should be able to handle. According to the latest update on the issue on AppleInsider though, there has been no intentional throttling by AT&T.

AppleInsider says that it has learned that the drop in speed is due to “an unintentional software glitch”, connected to High-Speed Uplink Packet Access in certain parts of the United States. Although AT&T has still not made any form of official statement on the matter, AppleInsider says that a fix for the problem is believed to be on the way in the near future.

Iron Commando Pro FREE For Today

Jul 07, 2010 - 6:07 AM - by PhilSynowiec

As a part of OpenFeint's Free Game of the Day, Iron Commando Pro is free today. Now this game is not the prettiest looking one out there but I found it to be loads of fun. I'm a big fan of Metal Slug and Contra, this game had that and a bit of a FLASH feel to it. The game has 8 challenging stages that get more difficult as you go along. You play as the commando(who is a bit of a stick figure) and basically you "run and gun" just like a Contra game.

Well, what are you waiting for, the game is FREE today only, give it a shot.

The guys over at Obama Paceman ran a speed test comparing the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 3GS in browsing speeds. They ran both phones on their AT&T's 3G network with Wifi turned off. With no surprise, the iPhone 4 came out victorious with noticeable speeds. The following sites were tested:

  • iWeb quick test page
  • WPtouch mobile site
  • ObamaPacman full site
  • Gizmodo mobile site

System Failure: "Only" 400 iTunes Accounts Effected

Jul 07, 2010 - 4:18 AM - by PhilSynowiec

On our previous System Failure, we reported that iTunes accounts were getting hacked/used to buy books from publisher "mycompany". Clayton Morris reports that only 400 accounts out of the 150 million on iTunes were affected by this. The iTunes servers, themselves, were in no danger in any way. So this must be due to spyware, keyloggers, etc. on peoples' computers. Scanning your computers at least once or twice a week is always a good habit. Apple is planning to upgrade their security so that you have to enter your 3 digit code on the back of your credit/debit card more often. Thuat Nguyen, the developer of the books, has been booted from the App Store for violation of terms.

This video caught my eye today. Lee Morris of Fstoppers.com, decided to take a whole photo shoot with an iPhone 3GS. This video was made to show people that you don't need all of that fancy-shmancy photo equipment to be a good photographer. For us, this just makes us feel better because not only do we have iPhones, we have iPhone 4s with our 5MP cameras!

Sit Back and Relax With A Calming iPhone Aquarium

Jul 06, 2010 - 6:08 PM - by Maura

Fish Farm is a really gorgeous looking aquarium app that’s out today for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It’s free to download as well, which makes it even more appealing, although you do have the option to make in-app purchases.

Fish Farm features over 75 3D fish and sharks that swim around and up to the screen and make faces at you, just like the real thing. They’ll even respond if you tap on the glass. You can customise your tank with over 50 decorations and backgrounds, and as you level up and unlock new items by raising, breeding and selling your fish, you can maintain up to 12 separate salt and freshwater aquariums at the same time.

If you don’t want to wait around for your fish to breed so that you can level up, you can purchase in-app cowry dollars, which are used just like coins to buy in-game items and upgrades.

“Fish Farm gives people the opportunity to care for exotic fish and construct their ideal freshwater or saltwater environments. Everything from the species of fish to the undersea home is yours to design and customise.”

iPhone 4 - Proximity Sensor Problems

Jul 06, 2010 - 12:05 PM - by iDan

Lately most of the news concerning iPhone 4 issues have been focused on the "death grip" and reception problems. The iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor is a growing concern as well. The device's proximity sensors designed to sense when the phone is held up to the user's face and deactivate the device's screen, thus preventing unintended activation of buttons on the display. According to MacWorld here's the solution:

Many affected users report that either a Settings reset or a hard reboot fixes their problem. One Apple support thread recommends that users open the Settings app, then go to General -> Reset, and choose "All Settings" at the top (note: this will not erase your apps, media, or other data -- that's what the "Erase All Content and Settings" button just below this option is for. "Reset All Settings" just reverts any Settings preferences you've customized back to their factory defaults). One Twitter follower, Brian Partridge, reported that AppleCare told him to just use Reset -> Reset Network Settings, not all settings, and it worked.
After reading this article, I noticed the problem over the last few days and it has become quite annoying. Let us know if this fix works for you.

AT&T Throttling 3G Upload Speeds?

Jul 06, 2010 - 11:47 AM - by wuyanks

AT&T, the self-described "nation's fastest 3G network" may not be so fast anymore, as there have been rumors suggesting that AT&T has begun throttling 3G speeds across multiple regions. Although there has been no official statement yet by AT&T, these reports have sparked an uproar over at the Macrumors forum, noting "ten-fold" decreases in upload speed. When in the past, users were accustomed to 1Mbps upload speeds, seem to now be capped at 100kbps.

The list of affected areas so far include
NYC, Central Jersey, Boston, Orlando, Seattle, South Jersey/Philly, Columbus, Cleveland, West Houston, Phoenix, Northern Colorado, St. Paul/Minesota, Suffolk County/Long Island, Quad Cities, South Jersey, Denver, Detroit Metro, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Fairfax and Minneapolis
This is certainly not a way to win over consumers, but then again AT&T doesn't seem to have a great track record in that regard. Remember, AT&T was the first major carrier to drop unlimited data plans, despite having arguably the worst coverage in the nation. Not to mention the reception issues with the Iphone 4 when "holding it the wrong way."

The idea of 3G throttling may not come as a huge surprise to some. If you may recall, back in October 2009 during CTIA, AT&T Wireless CEO Ralph De la Vega hinted at the possibility of throttling 3G speeds or data (via PCWorld):
3 percent of AT&T's smartphone customers use 40 percent of all smartphone data, that they consume 13 times the data of "the average smartphone customer," yet represent less than 1 percent of AT&T’s total postpaid customer base... "we have to manage the network to make sure that the few cannot crowd out the many,” De la Vega continued
So I guess this is one way to relieve some stress on AT&Ts network.

Have you experienced a throttling of your upload speeds? Let us know.

This is a video on how to fix your iPhone 4's LED Flash if it stopped working. People have messaged me asking me how to fix it, so I'll tell them in song...erm...video. Other things you could do is the following:
  • 1. Soft Restart - Hold down power button then "slide to power off"
  • 2. Hard Restart - Hold down both power and home buttons until the Apple logo shows up, then let go.
  • 3. Restore - Connect to iTunes and Restore your iPhone to factory settings.
Last choice it to visit the Apple Store Genius Bar.

A really cool online FPS for iPhone 4 that allows up to 5 on 5 team deathmatch. You have the choice of a variety of weapons along with grenades. The game runs smoothly and looks great on the iPhone 4's Retina display. Check out the video for full review.
