iPhone 4 Quick Tip #6 - Turn Your iPhone Into A Real Camera

Jul 19, 2010 - 11:08 PM - by PhilSynowiec
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exuJi8iMlQM[/ame]

Here in this video I will be teaching you guys how to use some cool camera features that will allow you to slide you "silent" button to take a picture. This app is really cool, but need work. Camera+ will do great once it is updated to 1.2 and then you can press your volume up button to snap a pic! I've been waiting for this a long time, hopefully other apps will follow as well.

Whoopi Goldberg Smashes her iPhone 4!

Jul 19, 2010 - 12:00 PM - by Maura
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NctJy9SxSds[/ame]

Whoopi Goldberg has publicly declared her frustration at her iPhone 4 on The View this morning, confessing that she has "murdered" it!
"This was far more than some antenna problem," she told her fellow Viewsters, according to a report on CBSNews.com's "Celebrity Circuit" blog. "It threw away e-mails that I got. It didn't take stuff in. I took that bad boy, I opened the car door..." she then mimed smashing the phone on the sidewalk. Possibly a little drastic, even though she explains that it actually cut out while she was doing an on-air interview!

Although Whoopi says that both she and fellow The View co-host Joy Behar have iPads which they love, clearly one dropped call too many has finally pushed her over the edge, and obviously she didn't want to wait to get her free case! Just wait until she discovers that email sometimes disappears from the iPad too - we could be looking at a double Apple device "murder"!

iPhone to get Monty Pythoned!

Jul 19, 2010 - 11:29 AM - by Maura

Zed Worldwide has today announced, to a chorus of funny voices and silly walk demonstrations, that it has acquired the worldwide mobile rights to the classic British comedy, Monty Python. Monty Python recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary and remains an iconic brand across TV, movies and video games, even spawning a broadway musical, Spamalot. The movies Life of Brian and Monty Python and the Holy Grail alone generated over $300 million in DVD sales. The TV shows and movies made stars of Monty Python team members John Cleese, the late Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam, all of whom have gone on to have their own individual highly successful careers as actors, directors, writers and artists.

Fans can expect Monty Python's Flying Circus to be appearing on the iPhone, and possibly iPad, although there's no confirmation of that as yet, in Q3 2010, with exclusive games, apps and personalization content, including video clips from the classic series and movies. Dead parrots optional.

RIM, Nokia, Angered by Jobs' "Death Grip" Comparision

Jul 19, 2010 - 7:32 AM - by Maura

3 reports today that the manufacturers of the phones mentioned by Steve Jobs at the Apple press conference on Friday have reacted angrily to his singling out of their devices during his presentation. Jobs mentioned RIM's Blackberry Bold, as well as Nokia, Samsung and HTC handsets, and even showed photographs of the various devices to prove that it's not just the iPhone 4 that suffers from the "death grip" issue. Clearly very annoyed, RIM co-chief executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsille issued the following joint statement:
"Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple's claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple's difficult situation."
Samsung and HTC's responses were a little more measured, with both simply pointing out that they have had very few complaints regarding antenna issues, but Nokia, like RIM, was a little more forthright and pointed, responding:
"We prioritise antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict."
Meanwhile, UK Apple network O2 has begged customers not to bother staff in O2 shops or on their customer help-line asking about free iPhone 4 cases.

Insane Video Made About Apple And The iPhone 4

Jul 19, 2010 - 5:23 AM - by PhilSynowiec
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn-YesqzvNk[/ame]

Check out this crazy video guys, I don't even really know what to say about this. This is a 3D video on YouTube that popped up and basically shows Apple as an abundance of metaphors for its stereotypes. One thing that got me in this video, is when Steve Jobs and Microsoft(might be Gates) duke it out in a lightsaber battle. In the end *spoiler alert* Jobs slaughters Microsoft and takes away its metaphorical crown that is the Darth
Vader helmet. Anyway, everyone, check this one out, its a bit of a trip.

White iPhone 4 delay: Glass Supplier?

Jul 18, 2010 - 4:02 PM - by DannyBoy
White iPhone 4 delay: the challenges faced by Apple's glass supplier?

This almost goes without saying, but it's truly been a wild ride for the iPhone 4 over the last three weeks. While most of us will just happily open our hands to Stevie J's freebies, there's one question that's still bugging us: what's actually holding back the white iPhone 4? Sure, Apple's now promised us an "end of July" delivery for its latest iTemptation, but it has yet to specify what the manufacturing difficulty is. According to Chinese newspaper 21st Century Business Herald, the problem stems from a little-known Chinese factory by the name of Lens Technology, which is apparently responsible for transforming fine raw glass into the majority of iPhone glass panels out there (and contrary to previous reports, Corning doesn't seem to play a part here). Read on to find out what's causing our invisible hero to stall.

Lens Technology -- a rather bland name for a touchscreen glass manufacturer -- isn't exactly a household name to the average gadget consumer, but its list of clients tells a different story: Huawei, Lenovo, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and more. Since its launch in July 1993, the company's set up several plants, including its latest site (circa December 2006) in Liuyang, Hunan that currently houses about 14,000 workers, which looks about right in the drawing above. While this is merely a fraction of Foxconn's 400,000 employees in Shenzhen, Lens' recent intake of some 7,000 "post-90's" (a Chinese saying for those born after 1990) workers still led to many disciplinary issues. But this wasn't the reason for the white iPhone 4 delay.

According to a project feasibility report published by Lens in 2006, its glass manufacturing process involves the following steps: developing the tooling, cutting the raw material (mainly sourced from Germany, Switzerland and Japan), fine-milling using CNC (computed numerically controlled) machines, sanding the edges, polishing, strengthening, cleaning, coating, screen printing, baking, anti-shatter treatment, assembling, and packaging. Yeah, pretty tedious. Now, a worker from Lens' quality control department has allegedly admitted that the company's screen-printing workshop may currently be dealing with some issues with the white iPhone 4 covers. Specifically, the factory's still working out the perfect combination of paint thickness and opacity -- the former to ensure the next sub-contractor has enough clearance for the digitizer overlay, and the latter for the absolute whiteness that Jony Ive and co. strive for. As we pointed out before, the prototype white covers we acquired appeared a touch darker than the iPhone 4 dock, so here's hoping that we'll see a better result when the official white phone comes out later this month.

Even if Apple does deliver the new batch of phones on the promised date, what about meeting the potential huge demand? According to industry sources, Lens' current production capacity only meets half of Apple's demand, thus becoming a major bottleneck for the entire iPhone 4 production pipeline. Of course, this could just be smack talk from envious competitors, and there's a small chance that other components might be affected, but the truth is the handset's currently in short supply -- after 3 million units since launch, Apple's online store was listing a 3-week shipping date for both colors at the time of writing this. Considering each CNC machine could apparently only cut out three iPhone 4 glass covers every hour, Lens will need to get its act together on the paint job and use all the machines it can get -- along with their skilled operators -- to keep Cupertino and its followers happy.

Firefox Home App Available Now for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Jul 17, 2010 - 8:24 AM - by Maura

Mozilla has announced via its blog that Firefox Home is now availabe for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Now before everyone gets excited, the free app, which can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store, is not an iPhone version of the Firefox browser, rather it's a utility that provides access to your Firefox desktop history, bookmarks and open tabs via your iphone. First you must use Firefox Sync to sync your browser data from Firefox on your home computer or laptop to the cloud, and the Firefox Home app will then pull it down and use it to search and browse the internet on the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch's Mobile Safari browser. The app enables you to view sites in Firefox Home, open them in Mobile Safari, or email your bookmarks to your friends. It also features a version of Firefox's Awesome Bar, where you can use the URL field of your browser to do a keyword search, which will then pull up results based on your browsing history and bookmarks. Firefox insists that your information will be protected and private when stored in the cloud.

What this basically means is that you can quickly access all your regular bookmarks that you use at home or in the office on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch when you're on the move, which sounds pretty cool and very handy to me.

Jobs Says Bloomberg Story was "Total Bull"

Jul 16, 2010 - 6:49 PM - by Maura

During a question-and-answer session after today’s iPhone 4 press conference Steve Jobs completely rubbished the Bloomberg story that said that he had been warned about the iPhone 4 antenna issues prior to launch. AppleInsider reports that Jobs said that the piece was “total bulls**t” when asked about it. Although Apple had already refuted the report, Jobs was typically succinct and unequivocal when asked about the matter, responding “it’s a total crock. We talked to everyone about it. We have a great community of scientists. They debate everything. And it’s healthy. The best ideas win.”

AppleInsider says that Steve Jobs also talked about a New York Times article from Thursday, which said that the antenna problems were caused by software and would be fixed with another iOS update. “They’re just making things up,” was Jobs’ response to that particular story. He was also reported as saying that Apple had considered an iPhone 4 recall, but didn’t think it was worth it in the end because the number of people actually complaining about the issue to AppleCare was in reality very small. Finally Jobs revealed that Apple had even sent engineers out to people who had complained about reception issues to test equipment in their homes! “These people literally get a knock at the door from Apple engineers with a bunch of equipment and want to plug it in and test reception. We’re really serious about this.”
