Next iPhone Could Have Quad-Core Processor

AppleInsider writes that according to Digitimes, Apple’s next iPhone, due to launch this fall, may well be powered by a quad-core ARM processor that is based on Samsung’s Exynos 4 architecture. The information comes via sources in the Far East. Just to give you some idea of what a quad-core ARM processor might mean for the next iPhone, AppleInsider says that the iPhone 4S has a custom dual-core processor that is clocked at 800 megahertz, called the A5. Another version of the A5 is also installed in the iPad 2, but running a little faster, at 1 gigahertz. The newest iPad has an updated version of the A5, known as the A5X, with a quad-core GPU, although still a dual-core CPU. The A5X CPU is based on Samsung’s 45-nanometer low-power architecture, as is the A5 CPU. So, as AppleInsider notes, if the next iPhone does indeed turn out to have a quad-core ARM CPU, this could be a major upgrade in comparison to Apple’s other recent devices, and possibly even worthy of the nomenclature “A6”.

Perhaps, with the next gen possibly having the quad-core, this is why Apple is having a hard time getting new batteries to fit within certain specs. Saw that in another news posts somewhere on here...
