Mashable has word today of a great case of Twitter panic based on absolutely nothing. From early on this morning, “$800 for an iPhone” has been trending on Twitter worldwide. Even as we speak, the hashtag #800DollarsForAniPhone is number two trending topic on Twitter worldwide. I’m sure a lot of you panicked when you saw it, thinking “goodness, that’s rather a lot for an iPhone!” or words to that effect. The funny thing is though, as Mashable reports, there is absolutely no truth to the Twitter rumour at all, and no one can even work out quite where the story came from. IBTimes writes that gamenguide.com posted a listing from taobao.com, the Chinese auction website, listing an iPhone 5 for $800 to $1,050, so possibly that’s where all the hoo-ha started, but basically, where it came from doesn’t matter, because it’s not true, although we’ll all have to wait for the actual (although still unannounced) launch even on September 12 to find out the actual price.
