Manually manage music & videos

Hello, recently purchased an iPhone 4S a few days ago.. I like to manually manage my music (drag an drop them) as i hate syncing music, anyway i checked the box and put some music/ringtones on, i then went to my friends house, wanting to put some music she had on her laptop on my phone, only to discover that it had automatically unchecked the manually manage music and videos box. i tried to check it again but it was telling me to erase and sync.. is anyone else experiencing this problem, if so does anyone know a solution to stop it automaticaly unchecking it when i go to a different laptop? i have an ipod touch and it doesnt happen on that.
