Lost Contacts

Hi, I have (just got) an iphone4 and just gave my daughter my iphone 3gs. I don't generally sync my phone thru itunes very often but today I did it and I lost all of my contacts. I now have all of her contacts on my phone. We only have one itunes account, but we have several ipods and have never had a problem before, but this is the first time we have had 2 iphones. When I open itunes and plug my phone in it recognizes the different phones, I don't get why it deleted my contacts and gave me hers. Is there a way to get them back? When you sync your phone to the computer it stores those contacts somewhere, does anyone know where?

It stores them in windows contacts or MS Outlook.

i also would like to know i have one ituns account but different i phones for my brother and i can i sync mine and his without mixing our date or replacing them is that possible?
if so how can i make ituns recognize the date are mine and not my brother's?

I did check my windows contacts, but I only have about 40 contacts there and I had almost 300 names and phone numbers in my iphone. I cannot find those other contacts anywhere I look.
