I don't know for sure but I know a Genus guy told me to keep away from magnets because it can harm your battery.....but I never looked into it.

The smart cover hinge magnets seem pretty strong on the iPad. I have put my smartcovered iPad on the fridge, but not sure I'd trust it that way for long!
