LTE is Overrated

I'm sure glad I didn't buy my iphone for the LTE because I don't see much difference over 3G. Granted, I was getting 3-11mb of download on my AT&T iPhone 4S. Web pages don't seem to load any faster, music sounds no better, and videos look the same. And who is gonna bust their data caps downloading movies?

I get 40mb of download in Jackson MS and its no big deal really. No difference whatsoever from 7mb of download on my wife's 4S.

Or perhaps 3G on Verizon's notoriously crappy slow network was so bad that everyone assumed LTE was the only way to get decent mobile Internet.

LTE connectivity and speed is going to be a "six to one and 1/2 dozen to another" conversation. It truly depends on the market (area you live) you're using your iPhone in. In St. Louis... LTE internet surfing, downloads, video viewing, etc. is ridiculously faster and more smooth than standard AT&T 4G. Again... depends on your market.

My point is the opposite. I'm happy with 3-11mb of download. I see no improvement with LTE speeds.

I guess then in that case don't bother upgrading regardless as I said in my post it will get better and all devices will support it if it is poor reception then it will drop down to 3G speed

In my case with Sprint in Fort Wayne, IN, the worst market for Sprint, I was getting 0.15 download speeds. With a network that is not quite half way up, I am getting 10MB download speeds on LTE. This far Sprint is putting up LTE in the areas where 3G is the slowest, for the most part.

We have just come into the cold part of the year and I am sure they will slow down until the towers are safer to work on and around. But I am eagerly waiting the finish of LTE, it is a vast improvement over 3G in my area.

I'm not sure I understand how that's possible...are you saying that you ran it side by side with your wife's 4s, downloading at 7mb, and your 5 at 40mb wasn't downloading anything any faster?

If that's the case, something is weird, unless what you were testing was so complex that the processor couldn't keep up with incoming data, which also doesn't make sense to me

Like copd said, faster is faster. Period. If you don't like faster - then that's a personal preference thing. In every measurable way, even in the newer markets for LTE, LTE is the fastest. I agree with Thomas that in some markets the difference will be smaller. Perhaps you're in one of those markets. But in my area I get 50-60mb down on LTE. That's 10x the 5mb down I was getting with AT&T 4G. Overrated? I think not.

I'm averaging 38 down (with as much as 63) and 10 up (with a high of 21.5), which is at least three times faster than I get on wifi, and ten times faster than I got with 3g/ATT's "4g." I'm thinking about just tethering my laptop to the thing, it would quadruple my connection speed.

Something seems wrong that LTE could top Wifi. I've heard that from a few - but the theoretical top of Wifi is still well beyond LTE at its best. Am I missing anything, guys?
