hey this should work on 3g or 3.i just fixed my 3gs like this, turn off your phone and then open your phone up and there should be 3 cables for the screen. plug in every cable except the proximity sensor cable and then try to start your phone. if your phone does start, congrats. now that it is on press the lock button and then take your screen off. and then plug in all 3 cables and voila it should work excellent. this problem is usually caused by a broken connector 3 on the logic board. let me know how this works

THANK YOU!!! Your post saved the day. I spent the better part of two days with the spinning wheel issue on my 3gs.
I had replaced the battery and could not get past the apple logo with the spinning wheel on reboot. My flex cable #3 may be broken not sure..but I don't miss the proximity sensor and my phone is working now thanks to you!

ive been sitting with my phone for days !! uloading n downloading firmware n software just like it said on the other sites. then i found this thread and i quote ..... VOILA !! it worked.
the shop said "software damaged" but i knew it wernt as it only started when i changed the screen.
