AirPlay allows you to connect any device on your home WiFi network and upload media (music, movies and pototos) to your Apple TV.
You can also tap into your home computer's iTunes library via your appleID.

Is it an app? I hate to sound ignorant! I guess the best question would be; how do you obtain AirPlay?
AirPlay is available on the device once you have an Apple TV connected to the same wifi network.
While playing a movie music, you will see a new symbol on your control panel, far right. Looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing up:

So apple TV will allow me to bring. My iPad/iPhone on my HD TV! Is easy to hook up and do I need any other accessories(wires)?
And one other question! I have the IPad2 and iPhone 4 not 4s. Are these older devises compatible with AirPlay/Apple TV?
iPad 2 and iPhone 4 both support AirPlay, however mirroring is only supported on the iPad2.
